right then boffins, heres one i havent seen before.
friend of mine gave me a call because her pc wouldnt boot. ive had a look and this is the problem.
pc fires up then gives a black error screen stating that windows was not shut down correctly, then options are presented, i.e. start windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking, command prompt, use last known settings that worked and etc...
which ever option you choose, the pc will then boot to the xp screen, and then restart itself, this is a continual loop. inserting the windows cd does not help (its an oem version pre installed on the pc at build) which i found strange, as i would of imagined it would of booted from the cd to enter recovery mode, but nothing happens.
help or links on this would be most appreciated and thanks in advance if you are able to assist

I've had the exact same problem a few times. You gotta get a bootable version of Windows and configure it to boot from CD (not always automatic) and repair. If repair doesn't work (happened to me) you gotta format and reinstall.

Throw a 2nd drive on there and install XP on it to and boot to it
Copy the data off the first drive.

and u can then keep it as is with 2 drives or take one out for another purpose.

the easy way is to boot to the repair utility using an xp disk and run chkdsk /f or /r.. also run fixboot .. should give u a new boot sector ...

hard way--->find another pc that has xp on it... copy all the files you can from the system32 folder .. take the hard drive out of the corrupted computer and slave it .. paste the files on the corrupted hard drive in the system32 folder (they all may not copy an paste... but most will)

this just for future reference for those that may stumble upon the thread..
